CADIZ — The Harrison Hills City School District moved to a hybrid learning plan today after the county’s reached a more serious level on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System.

As of Thursday, Harrison County moved up to risk Level 3, the red category, on the color-coded COVID-19 risk assessment map for the first time since the system was created amid the pandemic.

Due to the rise on the map, the school district’s curriculum will move to a hybrid learning plan. Dana Snider, superintendent of the Harrison Hills City School District, said classes would make the shift today.

“The whole district is moving to hybrid learning. That was part of our adopted plan that the board approved in August,” she said.

The change in curriculum is for the safety of the schools’ students and staff as virus spread continues in the community, Snider said.

For the implemented learning plan, students will be split into two groups. Each group will attend in-school instruction two days a week while the remaining days’ classes will be held online.

– Students with last names beginning with the letters A through L will have in-person classes Monday and Tuesday. Thursday and Fridays assignments will be available through Google Classroom.

– Students with last names beginning with letters M through Z will have assignments online through Google Classroom Monday and Tuesday, and will attend in-classroom instruction Thursday and Friday.

Snider said for both groups, Wednesday’s instruction will be held virtually with a teacher through Google Meets. Wednesdays will also serve as a cleaning day for the school, she said.

Snider said she is hoping the hybrid plan will only remain in effect for one week. Students will begin a two-week Christmas break Dec. 21 and are due back to school Jan. 4.

“We’re hoping to be either yellow or orange (on the advisory system) by Jan. 4, but if not, if we continue to be red, then we will continue on this hybrid plan when school comes back after the break,” she said.

Garen Rhome, administrator of the county’s health department, said the county’s rise on the map was due to flagging four of the indicators — New Cases Per Capita, New Cases Increase, Non-Congregate Cases and Regional Hospital ICU Bed Occupancy.

“This is the first time we’ve moved into red and the first time we’ve flagged four indicators on the advisory system since it went into effect over the summer,” he said. “We’ve been yellow, we’ve been orange. Over the last few weeks we’ve slowly been flagging more indicators and moving up in the occurrence rating.”

The county’s COVID-19 positive cases have continued to rise over the past month. Rhome said the county’s daily new cases numbers are in the double digits. The county also announced its seventh COVID-19 related death Friday.

Rhome said the county is seeing lower numbers of close contacts that reside outside of the infected person’s home.

“We’re generally seeing fewer close contacts from outside the household. The amount of close contacts that are being named is fewer and fewer,” he said.

There are currently around 450 individuals in quarantine due to being a close contact of a positive individual.

The health department is urging residents to stay home when possible, limit travel and follow the implemented guidelines.
