Detroit Red Wings' skid hits six with 3-2 loss to Florida Panthers - Detroit Free Press

Their lineup depleted of yet another top forward, the Detroit Red Wings responded with their best start of the season.

Then they got into penalty trouble.

They made it interesting late in the third period Sunday at Little Caesars Arena, but not enough to avoid their winless streak growing to six with a 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers.

WINGS MAILBAG: Why Steve Yzerman likely won't fire Jeff Blashill during season

Tyler Bertuzzi missed the game after suffering an upper-body injury Saturday. Dylan Larkin fed an energetic start with his fourth goal of the season and second point of the weekend. But the Wings were not able to sustain their momentum in the second period, thwarted by penalties that led to two Panthers goals. The Wings came out with a stronger third period, but Carter Verhaeghe scored at 8:09 to put them behind by two goals.

The Wings pulled Thomas Greiss for an extra attacker with three minutes on the clock, and Anthony Mantha scored his second goal of the series with 1:48 to go.

The Wings come away from the weekend with a 2-6-2 record, and next face a road trip that takes them to defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay, then Florida and Nashville.

Six men out

The Wings already had five players in COVID-19 protocol — forwards Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner and Filip Zadina and defenseman Jon Merrill. To also lose Bertuzzi, who had been the team’s best player and scored his fifth goal Saturday, was a significant blow. Bertuzzi, Zadina and Fabbri make up half of the top two lines, and they, Gagner and Merrill are power play regulars. Mathias Brome moved onto Dylan Larkin’s line with Bobby Ryan, and Vladislav Namestnikov centered the second line with Taro Hirose and Anthony Mantha. Givani Smith made his fourth appearance of the season, playing with Valtteri Filppula and Frans Nielsen, and Luke Glendening was with Michael Rasmussen and Darren Helm.

SPECIAL TEAMS WOES: Blashill sends a message in Saturday loss

Twenty men on

Despite missing key players, the Wings delivered one of their best periods of the season. Their power play, 4-for-31 coming into the game, looked threatening when a man advantage materialized 28 seconds after the puck drop. They created chaos in front of Chris Driedger and got three shots on net. Larkin stoked the momentum with a goal, capitalizing on a nice setup by Smith and stuffing a backhand at 4:12. The Wings got a power play out of that sequence, too, when Keith Yandle was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, and again did much better executing. The Wings had seven shots before the Panthers forced a save from Greiss, who faced only six shots in the first period while the Wings had 13 shots on Driedger.

Man advantage

The Wings got into penalty trouble early in the second period, though, when Rasmussen sent MacKenzie Weegar into the boards. Aaron Ekblad went after Rasmussen in retaliation. Referees slapped each of them with roughing calls, but Rasmussen got an additional two minutes for the hit. Patric Hornqvist converted on the power play, picking up his fifth goal of the season. Aaron Ekblad converted during the Panthers’ fourth man advantage, at 15:04 of the second period. The Panthers also scored two power play goals in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime victory.

Panthers Blog: Litter Box Cats

After playing Florida last night, the two teams are back at it again today, with a puck drop 2 hours earlier than usual.

I wasn’t able to watch much of last night’s game, but from what I did see Hirose looked really good. If you read my comments on the power play in yesterday’s gameday update, you would have recognized his movement on the power play at the beginning of the third period as exactly what I was talking about wanting to see. It was still too obviously being set up for the one-timer from Mantha, allowing Florida to cheat to that side, but that sequence was a step in the right direction.

In the post-game interview, Jeff Blashill was asked about the power play, and he instantly took away any confidence I had in the power play improving while he is head coach:

“Our power play hasn’t been good enough, and I think what is the definition of insanity – it’s doing the same thing over and over again,” Blashill said. “We felt like we’d try a couple other guys to give them an opportunity to see how they’d do. And when they weren’t getting it done, we went back to Larkin and Mantha to see what they’d do. Ultimately, power plays aren’t a whole bunch of schematics, it’s about going out and executing and making plays. Somebody has to step up and play better in those situations. If It’s Larks and Mantha, great. If it’s somebody else, great. I’m not sure how you find out if it’s somebody else if you don’t try other people.”

I’m still processing how terrible this quote is, but I lost my mind last night when I read this. Players can’t “go out their and make plays” if there aren’t clear “schematics.” I’m trying not to overreact, but this is indefensible. The problems with the power play don’t stem from having your best two offensive players on the ice. They stem from not having good, modern power play systems in place. You know, the coaches job.

At least I got to make this last night:

Red Wings are powerless as winless streak hits five - The Detroit News

Detroit — The Red Wings' losing ways continue.

They earned a point Saturday, but didn't get the two they badly wanted and needed, as the Florida Panthers defeated the Wings in overtime, 3-2, at Little Caesars Arena.

Rookie Aleksi Heponiemi, playing in his first NHL game, tipped in a pass from Anthony Duclair at 2 minutes, 45 seconds of overtime, giving the Panthers (4-0-1) the victory.

The Red Wings (2-5-2) have gone winless in five games, earning a point in two of those (0-3-2).

No question, the Wings looked more active and structured Saturday against Florida compared to the losses on the road trip. Easily, this could have been a two-point effort in the standings for the Wings, if it weren't for the bad luck in overtime.

"That's the response we needed, the way we have to play," forward Dylan Larkin said of playing the Panthers evenly throughout for over 60 minutes. "We played good, outplayed them 5-on-5, and took away their power-play goals. We played a good solid game and that's what we wanted coming home."

BOX SCORE: Panthers 3, Red Wings 2, OT

Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi had first-period goals for the Wings, while Aleksander Barkov and Keith Yandle answered with Florida power-play goals.

Mantha and Larkin were kept on the bench by Blashill for the first two Red Wings power plays in an effort to spark the struggling unit.

They were back on in the third period, though the Wings went 0-for-4.

"(It was) for the team, you have to take a look at it, it wasn't working and you try other guys," Larkin said. "The whole season, in training camp, he (Blashill) said it was a privilege (to be on the power play) and it is. We tried to switch it up and get it going and just watching from the bench you can see and it was definitely a good lesson for me, I guess."

Blashill felt it was necessary to take a different look.

"Obviously the power play hasn't been good enough and we felt we'd try a couple other guys," Blashill said, "and see what they could do and when they couldn't get it done, we went back to Larks and Mantha and see what they could do.

"Somebody has to step up and play better in those situations. If it's Larks and Mantha, great, and if it's somebody else, great. It might not the last time we make those decisions as guys come back (to the lineup)."

MORE: Red Wings understand urgent need to nip winless ways in the bud

Both of the Wings' goals Saturday were goals around the Florida net, off rebounds, and the types of goals Blashill wants to see more of in the games ahead.

"Those are the types of goals that are repeatable and anyone can score," Blashill said. "You don't need to be an elite talent to score, and those are the types of goals we're going to have to score.

"We've done a better job the last couple of games of making it hard on the opposing goalie and converging on the net and getting those rebounds."

Thomas Greiss stopped 23 shots for the Wings, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves for the Panthers.

The Wings lost Bertuzzi to an upper-body injury in the third period and he did not return. Blashill didn't have a clear update on Bertuzzi, other than saying Bertuzzi is "questionable" to play Sunday.

The Wings also lost Luke Glendening briefly in the third period after he took a stick to the face, although Glendening did return.

The teams complete this two-game series Sunday at Little Caesars Arena (5 p.m./Fox Sports Detroit/97.1).

Red Wings’ Jeff Blashill makes surprising decision with power-play units - MLive.com

red.indah.link

DETROIT – It seems counterproductive for a team that is missing several players and has struggled on the power play to not use two of its top scorers in a couple of man-advantage situations.

But Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill defended his decision to not put Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha on the ice for his team’s first two power plays in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Florida at Little Caesars Arena. He said it could happen again.

“Obviously, our power play hasn’t been good enough,” Blashill said. “That’s the definition of insanity, just doing the same thing over and over again. So, we felt like we’d try a couple other guys to give them an opportunity to see how they do. And when they weren’t getting it done, we went back to Larkin and Mantha.

“Ultimately, the power play is not a whole bunch of schematics, it’s about executing and making plays. Somebody’s got to step up and play better in those situations. If it’s Larks and Mantha, great; if it’s somebody else, great. I’m not sure how you find out it’s somebody else if you don’t try other people.”

The Red Wings went 0 for 4 on the power play, the last two with Larkin and Mantha on the unit.

“It’s something that for the team we got to take a look at,” Larkin said. “It wasn’t working, so try other guys.

“The whole season, even training camp, (Blashill) says (playing on the power play) is a privilege, and we just haven’t been good enough, so try to switch something up and get it going. It definitely was a good lesson for me, I guess.”

Blashill, already missing power-play people in Robby Fabbri, Filip Zadina and Sam Gagner due to COVID protocol, used Valtteri Filppula, Mathias Brome, Vladislav Namestnikov and Taro Hirose, players who haven’t played as much on the power play.

“I think Taro Hirose is a fairly natural fit as a half-wall guy; he’s probably got the most poise,” Blashill said. “It might not be the last time we make that decision as guys come back. If we don’t get it done, somebody’s got to come off. It doesn’t really matter your name; it matters who’s going to execute. At the end the day, I made a decision those guys were not going to be on it and somebody else was going to be on it. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

The Red Wings are now 4 for 31 on the power play (12.9 percent).

Chaos needed on power play

The Red Wings scored both of their goals on rebounds, one from the slot (Mantha) and one from the crease (Tyler Bertuzzi). It is the type of net-front havoc they need to create more of on the power play.

That is how Florida scored one of its two power-play goals, from Keith Yandle with 0.6 seconds remaining in the first period to tie it at 2-2.

“They were hard at our net,” Larkin said. “They just get it to the net and (Patric) Hornqvist was flying into the net there, created chaos and the puck was laying there for Yandle.

“Good second and third chances, throw it to the net, have bodies there. Get the puck back A lot of power-play goals in the league are scored like that.”

Said Blashill: “Creating havoc and outnumbering and converging at the net is how you score on the power play. It’s finding ways to funnel pucks to the net with more people than them. That starts with executing on your entries so you can get in the zone and set up. Tonight, we had opportunities for good entries and didn’t execute well enough.”

Mantha responds favorably

Blashill said Mantha has responded well after a bad game in Chicago last Sunday, in which he was benched for most of the third period.

“I think he’s working hard, he’s trying to get his game going,” Blashill said. “I think he’s played better the last couple of games.

“Anthony cares, he wants to be a good player. He’s just got to keep grinding. The biggest thing with any of our guys is to make sure you’re proactive with your work ethic ahead of time so then you’re in good positions to check, get pucks and attack better the other way, and Anthony has done a better job at that.”

Mantha has two goals and three assists in nine games, along with a minus-9 rating that is among the worst in the league.

“With Mo, he knows he has to take a step,” Larkin said. “He’s working, he’s trying to find his game.

“I thought (Saturday) was one of his best games. He was moving his feet. He’s got such long range and a great shot that if he moves his feet, he’s such a dangerous player, breaks up plays and ends up going the other way on offense. He wants to do better, and we got to do a good job getting him going and pumping him up and making sure he’s playing his game.”

Source: New York Red Bulls turn down Championship loan offer for Aaron Long - ESPN

red.indah.link

An offer from an English Championship club to take United States defender Aaron Long on loan has been turned down by the New York Red Bulls, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.

The offer involved taking on all of Long's salary and included an option to buy in the US$2-3 million range. The Red Bulls didn't respond immediately to a request for comment, though as of last Thursday a league source told ESPN that the Red Bulls had yet to receive an official offer.

Long is currently in Orlando with the U.S. national team, who are set to play a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday. The Oak Hills, Calif. native has made 18 appearances for the U.S. while scoring three goals.

The decline of the offer comes amid several reports regarding Long's future. ESPN reported on Friday that Liverpool was among the teams monitoring the U.S. central defender, while Soccer By Ives stated that there were three English Premier League clubs looking to bring Long on board. The Washington Post earlier reported that English Championship side Reading was interested in bringing Long in on loan, while MLSSoccer.com said there was "interest from clubs in England and France." The source confirmed that the French team that is interested is Lorient.

Long, 28, has drawn interest from a variety of teams over the years. Back in 2019 multiple bids from Premier League teams were rejected. These included a bid from West Ham United. A bid from Ligue 1 side Amiens was also turned down.

Long signed a new contract to play for the Red Bulls in 2019 and the deal has one more year to run plus a team option for the 2022 season.

Long was drafted by the Portland Timbers in 2014, but was released in midseason having had loan stints in the USL Championship with Sacramento Republic and the Orange County Blues. He soon latched on with the Seattle Sounders and spent 2015 playing for their reserve team. In 2016 Long went on trial with the Red Bulls and was signed to their reserve team, New York Red Bulls II, and spent the entire 2016 season in the USL.

In 2017, Long made a breakthrough into the Red Bulls first team, and has been a mainstay ever since, making 120 league, cup and playoff appearances, scoring nine goals. He was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2018, a season in which the Red Bulls claimed the Supporters Shield, which goes to the team with the highest regular season points total.

Report: New York Red Bulls linked to Red Bull Salzburg goalkeeper Carlos Miguel Coronel - MLSsoccer.com

red.indah.link

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

The New York Red Bulls could be set to bring in some goalkeeper reinforcements in the form of Brazilian backstop Carlos Miguel Coronel of Red Bull Salzburg, according to a Saturday report from Austrian outlet Kronen Zeitung.

The 24-year-old has been with Salzburg since 2017, but has never broken through as a regular, making five first-team appearances. He spent time on loan in 2019 with the Philadelphia Union, as well as their USL Championship affiliate Philadelphia Union II, so he's familiar with MLS. Coronel made four appearances for the Union and another eight for Bethlehem.

Prior to joining Salzburg, Coronel started his professional career in Austria with FC Liefering, where he made 67 appearances from 2015-2017.

Coronel has only played in one match for Salzburg under former RBNY head coach Jesse Marsch this season, so a move stateside could provide a chance to compete for more regular minutes, although there are already three other goalkeepers on the club's first-team roster. David Jensen and Ryan Meara split the starting duties between the posts for RBNY in 2020, with Meara starting 13 games to Jensen's 10.

19-year-old Luca Lewis was also added to the MLS roster in December after making three appearances last season for New York Red Bulls II.

2021 New York Red Bulls Roster as of January 27, 2021:

Red-carded Militao 3/10, Odriozola 5/10 as Madrid suffer title setback vs. Levante - ESPN

red.indah.link

Eder Militao was sent off early as 10-man Real Madrid were beaten 2-1 by Levante on Saturday in another blow to their hopes of retaining the La Liga title.

Militao was red-carded with just nine minutes played for bringing down striker Sergio Leon when in on goal. Shortly afterwards, Marco Asensio gave Madrid the lead on the counter-attack, slotting past keeper Aitor Fernandez after being played in by Toni Kroos.

Levante equalised with half an hour played, Jose Luis Morales firing a first-time volley past Thibaut Courtois, and after half-time the visitors missed the chance to go ahead when Courtois brilliantly saved Roger Marti's penalty.

Marti made up for that miss on 78 minutes, finishing off a well-worked short corner routine, as Madrid lost their first La Liga game since November.

Positives

Madrid had responded well to the back-to-back cup disappointments with their 4-1 win at Alaves last weekend and looked like taking another victory here when Asensio opened the scoring. It was a special goal, especially under the circumstances following the red card, made by the outstanding vision and technique of Kroos.

That lead didn't last, though, and in truth, it was only Courtois who kept the team in the game for much longer than their performance deserved. The goalkeeper's display was one of few positives on a frustrating afternoon.

Negatives

Madrid's makeshift defence was always going to be tested by a dangerous Levante, a team with just one loss in 11 matches in all competitions, boasting two of La Liga's top 10 goal scorers in Morales and Marti.

Neither the hapless Eder Militao nor the ineffectual Alvaro Odriozola have ever looked like serious candidates to become regulars in the starting XI. Here, Militao departed early, and Odriozola looked a liability throughout.

The result leaves Madrid seven points behind league leaders Atletico, who have two games in hand, and they will have to put together a truly extraordinary run of form in what's left of the season to overtake their city rivals.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- With Zinedine Zidane still absent with COVID-19, assistant David Bettoni had just 16 first-team players to choose from here, with particular problems in defence with Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez and Nacho all missing. That meant playing Odriozola -- very much a last resort at right-back -- and Militao, while the rest of the team picked itself. With the game in the balance at 1-1, an early change saw Vinicius Junior introduced for Eden Hazard, and promptly concede a penalty. There was no late rally or surge of Madrid attacks as the game drew to a close, with a lack of game-changers on the bench.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Thibaut Courtois, 8 -- Made a crucial penalty save in the second half, which followed a really smart first-half double stop from Roger Marti. Couldn't get near Morales' sweetly struck equaliser in between.

DF Alvaro Odriozola, 5 -- Just his second league start this season. Left Morales alone in space for the equaliser, although he wasn't the only guilty party there. An alarming, ongoing decline from a top prospect three years ago to a virtual bystander now.

DF Raphael Varane, 6 -- The defensive leader in the absence of Ramos, and even more so after Militao was sent off. Raced to help cover there, getting back into a position that some will argue meant the red card should have been yellow.

DF Eder Militao, 3 -- Followed an encouraging display against Alaves with a very early bath here. His red card for a clumsy challenge was Real Madrid's fastest ever for an outfield player in La Liga.

DF Ferland Mendy, 6 -- Lucky to escape punishment for a challenge on Gonzalo Melero in the build-up to Madrid's opening goal. Carelessly gave the ball away midway through the first half to put his team in trouble.

MF Casemiro, 6 -- Dropped to centre-back to partner Varane after Militao's sending off, a role he's perfectly capable of playing well. Shared some of the blame for Morales' goal, though.

MF Toni Kroos, 7 -- A lovely assist for Asensio's goal, playing the forward in on goal with one of the passes of the season. That's three assists in the last two games for the German.

MF Luka Modric, 6 -- One incredible second-half pass for Asensio with the outside of his boot. Otherwise, a little quieter than usual.

FW Eden Hazard, 6 -- Has started four of the last five games. Has looked to be making progress lately, although there have been false dawns before. Subbed off before an hour had been played.

FW Marco Asensio, 7 -- Scored the opener, showing great composure to finish after running half the length of the pitch. Had a chance to grab a second when he brought down a long ball over the top with a gorgeous first touch.

FW Karim Benzema, 6 -- Surprisingly quiet after his brace against Alaves last weekend. His substitution with the team behind and desperate for a goal was a surprise.

Substitutes

FW Vinicius Junior, 5 -- Replaced Hazard and his first move was to give away a penalty for a foul on Carlos Clerc right on the edge of the box.

FW Mariano Diaz, N/R -- Came on for Benzema at 2-1 down and didn't make an impact. The only centre-forward alternative in the squad now after Luka Jovic's loan departure.

MF Sergio Arribas, N/R -- Played the last 10 minutes and couldn't help the team get back into the game.

Red Wings understand urgent need to nip winless ways in the bud - The Detroit News

Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill previews tonight's game against the Panthers after Saturday morning's gameday skate. The Detroit News

Detroit — One of the negative aspects about last season for the Red Wings was the inability to stop losing streaks.

The Wings had separate losing streaks of eight, nine and 12 games last season. Losses would stockpile, the Wings would fall deeper in the standings, and the regular season felt that much longer.

It’s a shorter NHL season this time around because of the pandemic. But the Wings would rather avoid the long losing streaks.

Which makes this short, two-game home stand against Florida this weekend that much more important.

More: Power-play struggles becoming key factor in Red Wings' stumbles

The Wings entered Saturday’s game against Florida winless in four games — all on this recent four-game road trip. They face a good Panthers team twice, then go on a lengthy six-game road trip through Stanley Cup champion Tampa, Florida, and another good Nashville team.

So, you see why a win, or wins, at home are important this weekend.

“We have an opportunity, we’re at home now. We’ve got to take pride in playing at home,” defenseman Troy Stecher said. “This is a good opportunity to change the page.”

More: Former Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, 'a big-time winner', announces retirement

Especially in a short season like this one, a long losing streak early is likely to knock a team out of contention (the top four teams in the eight-team division qualify for the playoffs) quickly.

Getting a victory would build some confidence, said Stecher, who added the Wings’ locker room wasn’t pleased with the recent road trip.

“Anytime you’re on a losing streak, guys are upset,” Stecher said. “We didn’t get the results we wanted but it was definitely a good learning curve for our group, understanding we’ve got to play a certain way if we want to have success. When you get away from that, you’re going to get exposed, and especially at this level.”

Panthers on prowl

Florida has been one of the surprise teams in these opening days of the NHL season.

The Panthers had their first four games canceled due to COVID-19 protocol, and had a comparatively late start to the season.

But they entered Saturday's game 3-0-1, and with an impressive offensive attack, having scored four or more goals in three of the games.

"They've been in some close games and found ways to get points or win them," coach Jeff Blashill said. "That's what the league is. Every night, you are going to have opportunities, even if the score doesn't end up close, to make a play to either win or lose.

"They've found a way to be on the right side."

Ice chips

Blashill wouldn't speculate, after Saturday's morning skate, on the availability of goaltender Jonathan Bernier (upper body). But the Wings' calling up goaltender Calvin Pickard from the taxi squad Saturday afternoon likely meant Bernier will be unavailable to back up goaltender Thomas Greiss.

...Forwards Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner and Filip Zadina, and defenseman Jon Merrill, remain on the COVID-19 protocol list, but some of them should be coming off at some point this week.

Aaron Long to Europe? New York Red Bulls defender doesn't want to put a timeline - MLSsoccer.com

red.indah.link

New York Red Bulls center back Aaron Long has reportedly emerged as a winter transfer target of Premier League powerhouse Liverpool FC, a development that’s turned plenty of heads on either side of the pond.

MLSsoccer.com’s Tom Bogert has reported that teams in France and England’s Championship have also shown interest, increasing momentum behind the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year possibly moving to Europe. In 2019, RBNY reportedly rejected "multiple bids" from Premier League side West Ham for Long's services.

As transfer reports rev up, Long spoke with Counter Attack, a SiriusXM FC show, while at the US men’s national team’s January camp. They’re playing Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in an international friendly, with deadline day in England coming Monday night.

“I don’t want to play the hypothetical,” Long said. “I definitely said that my goals and aspirations are to hopefully one day be in Europe. I’m not going to put a timeline on it by any means. I don’t want to say that that’s where I need to be by a certain date because then if that doesn't happen, have I failed my goal? For now, I’m just worried on Trinidad. I just really want to show well in this game and let my agent handle the rest.”

Long has eight goals and three assists in 105 matches (100 starts) for RBNY, emerging as one of the league’s top center backs. He’s also appeared in 18 USMNT games, scoring three times.

That background could make Long an enticing addition for several teams across Europe. He’s eager to test himself, though is staying focused on his RBNY duties as their first full season under head coach Gerhard Struber nears.

“Hopefully, if the cards fall that way, then I’ll get that experience as well,” Long said. “But if not, I’m a New York Red Bull player and I’m going to do my best to win a trophy with the club.”

Should Long head to Europe, he’d join USMNT center back Mark McKenzie in moving overseas this winter. McKenzie went from the Philadelphia Union to Belgium’s Genk, while FC Dallas right back Bryan Reynolds (awaits senior US debut) is reportedly heading to Italy’s Serie A. That’s on top of Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris joining Championship side Swansea City on loan, as well as Brenden Aaronson officially departing Philadelphia for Austria’s RB Salzburg.

Red Stars’ Bianca St. Georges learning to live the country, club lifestyle - Chicago Sun-Times

red.indah.link

Bianca St. Georges is light-years away from the player she was when she got drafted by the Red Stars with the 20th overall pick in 2019.

Obviously, two years have passed since the Quebec defender was drafted out of West Virginia, but more significantly are the changes she has made mentally and physically that earned her an invitation to Canada’s upcoming national-team training camp ahead of the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.

Changes she hopes will earn her a key role in the Red Stars’ 2021 game plan.

“It was very hard to get my confidence up at the beginning [of the 2020 season],” St. Georges said. “Not only was I struggling with my individual performances, but the people around me were world-class players. It was a big pressure for me to show up and prove I was worth being part of the team.”

Despite being drafted in 2019, St. Georges’ rookie season began in 2020 after injury kept her sidelined. When she did make her debut for the Red Stars, it was with an intensity that matched her world-class teammates.

As she became more comfortable, her true style of play came out. It’s a style she describes as high-risk, high-reward.

St. Georges proved her value by starting all five games she appeared in during the Challenge Cup, earning a nearly 60% success rate on her tackles and scoring a goal in the semifinal.

She continued to impress during the Fall Series, improving her success rate on tackles to nearly 74%.

Last year was an opportunity for the Red Stars to get young, inexperienced players some minutes on the field. It was a rare chance for coach Rory Dames to give them game experience without threatening the team’s shot at winning an NWSL championship.

This year, St. Georges said all of that has changed. They’re bringing in the chemistry they gained from the Challenge Cup and Fall Series, but the focus has shifted from individual performances to team performance.

Some of the Red Stars players had a phone call this week centered around what they want the mentality to be in 2021.

“This year, we’re focusing on the team,” St. Georges said. “And then after that, individually thinking about OK, you have to fix this for the sake of the team.”

St. Georges will report to Red Stars training camp Monday before departing for national team camp for two weeks beginning Feb. 6.

Her main priority at her first senior national team camp is to continue proving her place on the field through steady contributions and consistency while showing she is coachable. She said if her teammates give her advice on her game, she plans to apply it immediately.

“Once people see you can be coached and you can grow, it’s a big indicator that player can go far,” St. Georges said.

St. Georges said it’s challenging to find the balance between the national team’s expectations that players excel individually and the Red Stars’ team-first work ethic.

Dames always has encouraged his national-team players in the process of finding stability between what their two teams need from them. St. Georges plans to handle this juggling act by reminding herself of the basics as a defender and not losing her confidence on the field. In the past, she thought her performance needed to shock people in order to stand out. Now she knows playing simple, clean soccer can help her stand out even more.

Still, that high-risk, high-reward mindset always will be a part of St. Georges’ game. She’s just learning to be more calculated with it.

“Consistency is something that coaches really like,” St. Georges said. “Then, when you do something unexpected, it better be good. High risk, high reward.”

Red Wings return home feeling urgency, with no help on the way - MLive.com

red.indah.link

The Detroit Red Wings embarked on their first road trip feeling good about their start to the season.

Then they went 0-3-1, experiencing many of the issues that led to their horrendous 2019-20 season – defensive breakdowns, lack of scoring, ineffective power play.

They make a quick return home with games against the Florida Panthers Saturday (7 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit) and Sunday (5 p.m., FSD), and there is urgency to bank some points because then they go back on the road for six games.

“We can’t keep letting two points slip away. Every game is important being against our own division,” Dylan Larkin said following Thursday’s 7-3 loss at Dallas.

“We’re on the road for long periods of time and have to find a way to capitalize on points at home. We’re playing against a Florida team that hasn’t played many games. We have to find a way to get points at home.”

Florida is 3-0-1, having had four games postponed due to COVID-19 issues with opponents (Dallas, Carolina).

The Red Wings (2-5-1) were missing five regulars on their trip due to COVID protocol – forwards Robby Fabbri, Filip Zadina, Sam Gagner and Adam Erne and defenseman Jon Merrill. None will be ready this weekend and some likely won’t be available at the start of their trip next week.

Players on the COVID protocol list can’t exercise for a minimum of 14 days. Once they’re cleared, they will need some practice time before returning to the lineup.

“Part of the process is getting them back into shape to they don’t injure themselves, that’s probably the No. 1 priority, they don’t have groin issues or soft-tissue injuries because they haven’t skated at that level,” coach Jeff Blashill said.

“They’ll only be put in when we perceive they’re in game shape. They might not be as practice-ready as we want, but if they’re in game-shape there’s a good chance they’ll be inserted into the lineup.”

Their absences have contributed to the struggles, particularly on offense, where the Red Wings are tied for 29th, averaging 2.00 goals per game, and on the power play (22nd at 14.8 percent).

Fabbri was centering an effective second line with Zadina and Bobby Ryan. Those three, along with Gagner and Merrill, also played on the power play.

The available players must step up their game.

Anthony Mantha has just one goal and three assists, with a league-worst minus-10 rating. Vladislav Namestnikov has only one point (a goal) and Mathias Brome has no points in eight games.

“If there’s somebody else who can do a better job, we have to keep looking,” Blashill said. “We have to find a way. Those guys have to pick their games up or somebody else has to do the job. We’ll have some guys coming back, but it’s not through the weekend.”

Larkin, after Thursday’s game, spoke about a lack of confidence on the power play.

“We have the puck on our stick and we’re nervous to make plays,” he said. “We don’t want it on our stick on the power play, we’re second-guessing everything, we’re not moving around, we’re not hard on it to get the entries we want and set up.

“I think every power-play goal we’ve scored this year we just kept it simple, throwing it to the net. It’s been not the prettiest goal, but it’s in the net. It’s got to find a way to get going. We’re getting power plays, we’re getting chances, they’re big opportunities, and that’s where we got to create momentum for our team.”

Bernier out: Goaltender Jonathan Bernier suffered an upper-body injury in the second period Thursday after a collision with Mantha. Bernier left the game and his status for this weekend is uncertain.
