LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Thursday the addition of two-time All-Sun Belt wide receiver Kaylon Geiger to the Red Raider football program.
Geiger will play his final collegiate season with the Red Raiders after arriving in Lubbock this past weekend following two years at Troy University in Alabama. He will be immediately eligible for the upcoming 2021 football season as part of the one-time transfer rule that was recently adopted for FBS programs.
"We're excited to add a wide receiver with Kaylon's experience to our football program," Wells said. "K.G. is an impact player with the ball in his hands, and we believe he will be a tremendous addition to what I consider an already-talented wide receiver room. We're fortunate he chose to join our Red Raider family."
Over his two seasons at Troy, Geiger proved to be dynamic in space, catching 141 passes for 1,625 yards and eight touchdowns over 23 games as he was tabbed the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year as a junior in 2019 as well as an All-Sun Belt first team honoree. He collected second team accolades from the conference coaches this past season.
Geiger gathered 77 catches in his debut season at Troy in 2019, which ranked third all-time in the school's single-season history. He notched 873 yards through the air that season as he ranked second in the Sun Belt for receptions, regular-season receiving yards and receiving yards per game, all categories he finished in the top five for this past season.
In addition to his role as part of Troy's spread attack, Geiger was a key cog in the Trojans' return game, averaging 23.7 yards via kick returns over his 23 career attempts. He also returned five punts over his two seasons en route to averaging nearly 100 all-purpose yards per game over his tenure (97.7).
Geiger signed with Troy after two strong seasons at Navarro College where he led the junior-college ranks with 70 catches as a sophomore and ranked second nationally with 954 receiving yards. He was a second team All-Southwest Junior College Football Conference selection that season en route to completing his tenure ranked third in Navarro history with 100 career receptions and fifth with 1,451 receiving yards.
Geiger, a native of Fort Worth, starred at Paschal High School in the DFW metroplex where he was rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports. He was an honorable mention All-District selection as a junior and was also a member of the school's track and field and basketball programs.
His signing continues the reshaping of the Tech roster under Wells, who has inked eight transfer student-athletes alone for the 2021 season, including seven from a power-five conference. Tech opens the 2021 season Sept. 4 against Houston in the Texas Kickoff hosted at NRG Stadium.
