Red Riders stay red-hot, win city championship - The Daily Times

Newbrough CELEBRATING — Weir High’s softball celebrates winning the city championship after defeating Madonna on Monday.

WEIRTON — As the temperatures of heated up, so has the Weir softball team.

The Red Riders remained red-hot as Weir broke open up a close game against city-rival Madonna en route to a 14-0 victory in four-and-a-half innings Monday evening at home in the city championship game to once again win the city bragging rights.

“To Weir alumni and to the girls, winning the city championship is very important,” first-year Weir (20-7) head coach John Leary said. “It gives them city bragging rights. It may mean more to the parents, but being city champions means a lot to the girls. It means whenever they walk around the city they can say they are city champions. They got us in girls’ basketball. Five of my softball players also play girls’ basketball. This takes a little bit of the sting away from that. These girls play against each other their whole lives, and then they compete against each other in high school.

“Winning the city championship is meaningful. I think this is the first group of seniors who have never lost a city championship game. We won it their sophomore year. I remember coming here with Frank (Sisinni) in 2016, and we set this as a goal. Going into that year, it had been many years since we won it.”

The Red Riders erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open what was a close game.

“It was 1-0, and then it turned into a disaster after that,” Madonna (9-7) head coach Chris Conti said. “Weir played well. They did a tremendous job hitting the ball. We just aren’t making the routine plays. We misplay balls in the outfield. I told the girls that they have to get dirty. You have to dive for the ball.”

Madison Angus picked up the win for Weir.

She only allowed one single while striking out one and walking three — one of which was intentional.

Landry Bone took the loss for Madonna. Bone allowed 10 runs on 11 hits while striking out three without walking a batter in 3 2/3 innings of work inside the circle. She was hit by a batted ball in the fourth. She remained in the game before eventually being pulled later in the inning. Madalena Daugherty got the final out. She allowed four runs on four hits.

Five of Weir’s 15 hits went for extra bases — three doubles, a triple and a home run.

“Hitting is contagious,” Conti said. “Rosnick’s home run started them off, and then everybody followed her.

“I think we gave a good effort. We did not play bad. I thought we were playing well up to that point. We had some opportunities. We just weren’t able to score.”

Angus tallied two singles, a double and two RBIs to help her cause, Mallory Rosnick recorded a single, the aforementioned home run and two RBIs and Chesney Tice collected a single, a double and three RBIs.

Also, Mea Kaufman finished with a double and two RBIs, Reagan Hoover produced an RBI triple and Rylee Donaldson delivered an RBI double. Alexis Adams added two singles and an RBI.

“He’s exactly right,” Leary said about Conti saying hitting is contagious. “That has been our MO all year. Hopefully, we can keep it up. It seems like we will go three or four innings and score a run, and then from then on we start to hit and once we start to hit, everybody starts to hit. I am very proud of the kids.

“I want to thank our parental field crew for the work they did today. If it wasn’t for them, we don’t play this game today. I got here at 3:30, and there were puddles on the field.”

Daugherty tallied a single for Madonna’s lone hit.

“We have lost to some really good teams,” Conti said. “We played well, but we didn’t win those games. I like playing good teams. I like playing these games. Playing good teams has made us better.”

Hoover reached on a fielder’s choice in the first, and after stealing second and third, she scored her team’s first run on a double by Angus.

Trailing 1-0, Madonna loaded the bases in the third thanks to two walks — one intentional — and Daugherty’s single however, Angus was able to get out of the inning thanks to a groundout.

Rosnick led off the fourth with solo home run over the fence in left field, and the flood gates opened at that point.

“We are 16-1 in our last 17 games,” Leary said. “After 10 games, we were 4-6. Now, we are 20-7. I am very pleased.”

The win allowed Weir to sweep the season series. The Red Riders shut out the Blue Dons, 12-0, May 12 at Starvaggi Park.
