LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 23 Texas Tech kept itself in the hunt to move past the NCAA Regional round Tuesday following an even-par 288 second round at the University of Louisville Golf Club that pushed the Red Raiders into a tie for ninth place.
The Red Raiders shot 13 strokes better than their opening-round card en route to cutting their deficit for sixth place to four strokes, one better than where Tech entered the day. Tech is tied with Mercer and North Florida for ninth overall, a stroke back of UCF in eighth place, three from seventh-place UCLA and four behind Michigan State in the coveted sixth and final spot.
The majority of the 18-team field shot over-par Tuesday, giving Tech a window to move up the leaderboard as the day progressed. The Red Raiders, who started from the No. 10 tee for the second-straight day, drastically improved on the back nine compared to Monday, finishing 8-under among its four counting scores with only bogey during that stretch.
Cecilie Nielsen sank three key birdies on the back nine alone to pace the Red Raiders with a 2-under-par 70 round that featured only a bogey at the par-4 15th. The round moved Nielsen to 1-over for the tournament and into a tie for 16th overall, seven strokes back of individual leader Christin Eisenbeiss of North Florida.
Amy Taylor and Gala Dumez were both only one stroke back of Nielsen at 1-under for the day, pushing Taylor to 2-over for the tournament and into a tie for 20th with Dumez one back in a tie for 28th overall. Dumez had a similar round as Nielsen with only one bogey at the par-5 13th to go along with a pair of birdies, the first at the par-4 18th followed by another at the par-5 9th.
The ninth remained a favorable hole for the Red Raiders as Dumez, Taylor and Anna Dong all made birdies at the location. As a team, Tech has recorded a birdie at the ninth in eight of its 10 chances so far this week as the Red Raiders lead the field by combining to shoot 6-under on the par-5s this week.
Taylor's birdie at the ninth was one of four over her final seven holes as she also drained key putts at the par-3 3rd, the par-5 4th and the par-4 6th. Taylor is currently playing the par-5 locations at 3-under for the tournament, which is tied for fourth overall.
Dong and Sofia Garcia completed Tech's round with a couple 4-over cards, pushing the pair to 7-over and 9-over, respectively, for the tournament. Dong was 2-under over the final 11 holes after a difficult start to her round.
Florida State remains the tournament leader as the Seminoles are now 1-over for the tournament following a 3-over second round. Arkansas had the low score of the day at 6-under to jump up six spots into a tie with South Carolina for second place at 5-over. Louisville and Texas round out the top five at 6-over and 8-over.
Tech will be in the 7 a.m. CT tee group for the third-consecutive day as the Red Raiders will be paired with UCF and UCLA during Wednesday's final round. Live coverage can be found throughout the day at Golfstat.com.
