The Red Raiders, thanks in part to birdies from all five players at their final hole, closed the opening day of the NCAA Louisville Regional in 11th place Monday following a 13-over-par 301 round at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
Even with the slow start, Tech enters Tuesday's second round only five strokes back of Auburn for the sixth and final spot to advance to the NCAA Championships. The top six teams from this week's regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 21-26 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Top-seeded South Carolina ended the day six strokes ahead of the Red Raiders in fifth place, while Texas is in seventh at 9-over followed by UCF, Tennessee and Arkansas at 11-over and in a tie for eighth overall. Florida State jumped out to a five-stroke lead to start the tournament as the Seminoles fired a 2-under round to sit in front of UCLA (3-over), Michigan State (4-over) and host Louisville (5-over).
Tech does have some recent history to fall back on in overcoming a difficult opening round as the Red Raiders were in seventh place in the nine-team Big 12 Championships just under a month ago before rallying to finish second overall two days later. In that tournament, Tech was seven strokes out of second place after the first 18 holes.
If the Red Raiders ultimately end up in contention to move past the regional round this week, they will likely look back at the par-5 ninth as a reason why. Tech totaled 10 birdies on the day with five of those coming at the ninth as the Red Raiders quickly narrowed the gap with the rest of the field.
The trio of Amy Taylor, Cecilie Nielsen and Anna Dong pushed the Red Raiders over the opening 18 holes as all three finished at 3-over 75, which was good for 32nd place. Gala Dumez was a stroke back at 4-over for the day, while Sofia Garcia finished at 5-over despite sinking four of Tech's 10 birdies overall.
Tech will get another early start Tuesday morning as the Red Raiders will be once again in the 8 a.m. tee group. Garcia will start the round for the Red Raiders, who will begin from the No. 10 tee box.
