LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics honored its best and brightest Monday night with the annual Red and Black Gala, which was hosted at the newly-opened Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.

The gala, a yearly event for Texas Tech student-athletes each May, returned as an in-person event this year after previously being held in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual event recognizes student-athletes for their work not only in competition, but, most importantly, for their efforts in the classroom.

Current women's golf standout Sofia Garcia was among the top individual winners as she was recipient of the Jeannine McHaney Award, which is presented to a female student-athlete who exemplifies the standards of the late McHaney in areas of academic achievement and athletic excellence.

Garcia, who returned recently from the Augusta National Women's Amateur, is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and is currently on pace to break the record for the lowest scoring average in program history. She is already the Texas Tech all-time leader with five individual titles during her career.

The ceremony also honored the top graduating senior for every sport, the list of student-athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the fall semester and the eight recipients of the Big 12 Conference Dr. Gerald Lage Award. Additional winners included track and field's Josiah Macinnis and Ruth Usoro, who collected with the Spirit and Sportsmanship Award.

Additionally, two programs were recognized as well as Tom Stone's soccer squad combined for the athletic department's highest team GPA, while the Red Raider football team collected the Good Citizen Award for its work in the community. Both programs are repeat winners in those two respective categories from a year ago.

Every award presented during the gala was determined based on academic merit an in consultation with the staffs at the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes and the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy.
