BYESVILLE — St. Clairsville and John Glenn have waged some battles on the track at Eugene Capers Field at Meadowbrook High School over the years.
Saturday afternoon was no different, as the Division II Eastern District Championship wrapped up under hazy and hot conditions.
The battle — this time around — went the way of the Lil Muskies, who regained the lead by two points entering the 4×4 and then defeated the Red Devils in the final event to seal the deal and claim the title with 132 points, which was three more than the Red Devils.
Steubenville had a strong showing in the field and in the short sprints.
Big Red was third in the team standings with 110 points. Of those points, 80 came virtue of first-place finishes.
Leading the way was talented junior thrower Amya Livingston, who won the shot put and discus throws with marks of 44-0 1/2 and 110-4, respectively.
Standout freshman Sabria Jones had another highly impressive showing. She won three individual titles and a fourth gold as part of a relay. She got her day started by marking the sand at 17-5 1/2 to win the long jump. Jones also completed the short sprint sweep, winning the 100 in 12.49 and the 200 in 25.28.
Isabella Yetts is the district champion in the 400 after a 61.52 effort. She also claimed the fourth qualifying spot in the 200 with a time of 26.52. She was also fourth in the 100 with a 13.04.
Big Red’s team of Madison Beadling, Madalyn Criss, Mya Stackhouse and Yetts teamed for a 4:18.10 to win the 4×4.
With Jones joining Stackhouse, Criss and Beadling, the Big Red 4×2 team turned in an impressive 1:45.21 to win the 4×2. Beadling also was second in the 300 low hurdles in a time of 47.75.
Big Red’s 4×1 team was second, circling the oval in 51.04.
