William "Red" Mack, an offensive end on the 1966 Green Bay Packers championship team, died April 8, 2021, at his home in South Bend, Ind. Mack, a native of Oconto, Wis., was 83.
Signed by the Packers in September 1966 after being cut by Atlanta, a first-year expansion team, Mack played in eight regular-season games and also the NFL Championship Game and Super Bowl I. He didn't catch any passes, but he became a fan favorite on special teams. He was cut early in training camp the next year. Prior to joining the Packers, Mack played five years for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, plus one game with Atlanta. He played collegiately at Notre Dame.
In February, John Roach, backup quarterback to Bart Starr from 1961-63, died at age 87.
