NORMAN – No. 20 Oklahoma opened the weekend with a 6-1 win over No. 21 Texas Tech on Thursday night at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners (9-9, 1-0 Big 12) avenged a 4-1 loss to the Red Raiders on March 14 in Dallas as they opened the match with the doubles point, then picked up singles wins on five courts.
"I was really proud of how our guys came out," said OU head coach Nick Crowell. "We won three matches 7-6 in the third and another match 7-6, 7-5, so it was an unbelievable college tennis match. Give credit to Texas Tech, they played really well. Our guys fought the whole time and that's what happens when you come out and play tough in the Big 12."
In doubles, Mark Mandlik and Max Stewart won handily at the No. 3 line, rolling past Dimitrios Azoidis and Ilgiz Valiev 6-1.
Jake Van Emburgh and Matt Rodriguez fell to Tech's Reed Collier and Isaac Arevalo 6-3 on court two, leaving court one to decide the point. There, No. 28 Alex Martinez and Nathan Han held on to defeat Parker Wynn and Franco Ribero after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7), and seal the point for OU.
No. 111 Mason Beiler was the first Sooner off the court in doubles as he handled Ilgiz Valiev 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
Mandlik fell to Azoidis after three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at the No. 5 line. The Sooners didn't let Tech in, responding with wins from Martinez and Van Emburgh.
Martinez battled to a 7-6 (6), 7-5 win over Ribero on court three, powering back after facing set point as Ribero led 5-2. Martinez won five straight games to close out his match and boost the Sooners to 3-1.
"Alex's match was a big key to the match today," Crowell said. "He was 5-2 down in the second set and winning that in straight sets really helped close the match out for us. Him and Jake finished in a few minutes of each other ... I was glad to see our guys tough it out at the end."
No. 108 Van Emburgh secured the win with a three-set victory over Wynn at the top spot. The Sooner dominated the opening frame 6-3 before Wynn took set two 6-4 to force a third. A back-and-forth final set came down to a tiebreaker, where Van Emburgh prevailed 7-5 to win it 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
The last two matches played out. Justin Schlageter tacked on another win for the Sooners, taking out Isaac Arevalo in a comeback effort, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
Han finished the night with another win for OU, holding steady to defeat Collier in an extended match, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5)
