MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – After a top-25 series win and a midweek sweep at home, No. 8 Texas Tech baseball will hit the road with momentum as the Red Raiders travel to Morgantown, W. Va., for a three-game set at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Red Raiders and Mountaineers will meet for the 28th time in their history on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. CT first pitch in the opener. The series continues at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday before a 12 p.m. CT start on Sunday for the finale.
The entire series can be seen on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Fans can also tune in to the radio call on the Texas Tech Sports Network from Geoff Haxton and Jamie Lent.
The Red Raiders (24-7; 5-4) are looking for their third Big 12 series win of the season as they head to Morgantown, where they are 5-7 all-time. The Red Raiders and Mountaineers (13-14; 4-5) met six times during the 2019 season with WVU taking 2-of-3 in Morgantown and then winning 2-of-3 against Tech in Oklahoma City.
West Virginia won its first Big 12 series this year against Kansas before dropping consecutive series to No. 16 Oklahoma State and Baylor. WVU dropped the first two games to the Bears last weekend, but picked up a win in the finale and topped Marshall, 9-3, in its lone midweek game.
Texas Tech has won four games in a row despite being bitten considerably by the injury bug. Tech was down three regular starters this week, including the team's batting leader in Dru Baker, Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year Dylan Neuse and versatile starter Kurt Wilson. A key piece of the rotation was also sidelined this week as Friday starter Brandon Birdsell exited his start against TCU early due to injury.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Game 1: LHP Patrick Monteverde (5-1, 2.58 ERA) vs. LHP Jackson Wolf (3-3, 3.05 ERA)
Game 2: RHP Micah Dallas (1-2, 3.38 ERA) vs. LHP Adam Tulloch (0-3, 7.03 ERA)
Game 3: LHP Mason Montgomery (1-1, 4.13 ERA) vs. LHP Ben Hampton (3-0, 3.10 ERA)
PITTSBURGH NATIVE GETS THE START FRIDAY NIGHT
Texas Tech will be without weekend staple Brandon Birdsell, sliding Pittsburgh native Patrick Monteverde from his Saturday role up to the Friday night starter. A grad transfer from Seton Hill, Monteverde opened his Tech career with three scoreless outings and didn't allow a run for his first 20.1 innings or a walk in his first 24.0 innings. Tech will follow with preseason All-American Micah Dallas, who starred in the Friday role as a freshman during Tech's 2019 run to the CWS. Mason Montgomery will start the finale after coming out of the bullpen last weekend for one of the best outings of his career, striking out seven Horned Frogs in 5.0 innings of relief.
JUNG, BAKER, CONLEY ON WATCH LISTS
Tech's top three hitters were placed on national watch lists this week. Second baseman Jace Jung and outfielder Dru Baker were among 45 players placed on the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list for the top amateur player in the nation. Tech is one of just four schools with multiple players on the list. Cal Conley, meanwhile, was named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list, which honors the nation's top shortstop and is named after former Red Raiders shortstop Brooks Wallace, who died in 1985 at the age of 27 from Leukemia.
STANDINGS WATCH
Despite the series loss at KSU, the preseason Big 12 favorites remain in solid position to contend for the Big 12 title due to top-25 series wins against No. 10 TCU and No. 15 Oklahoma State, two of the three teams who are ahead in the standings. Tech trails Texas by two games in the loss column and will get a crack at the Longhorns in Austin later this month. All four of the remaining conference matchups come against teams currently lower in the standings.
