Armstrong: It’s a very emotive instrument. It can make you cry and seconds later it can make your heart skip with joy. The pipes only have one octave so you would think you’d be a little hamstrung creatively with that. You’re not though. They have amazing harmonics when played well. I must stress, when played well. If you get them even slightly out of tune, for me, it loses the appeal. Because they are so difficult to keep in tune, I hear an awful lot of bagpipers that ruin it, which is a pity.
