DETROIT – Jonathan Bernier could be idled for several weeks, or he could return soon.
The Detroit Red Wings don’t know how long the lower-body injury he suffered in Thursday’s game will sideline their top goaltender, even after undergoing some tests on Friday.
“I would just say right now it’s day-to-day until I know more,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “I don’t know if that day-to-day stretches into a week or weeks. It’s all based on healing process and I can’t tell you how long that’s going to be.”
Bernier was injured with 1:28 remaining in the second period of a 3-2 victory over Dallas. He was sprawled out and reaching for a loose puck behind the net when teammate Patrik Nemeth, battling with a Stars player, fell on top of him.
Bernier didn’t practice Friday.
He has been their most valuable player in each of the past two seasons. He is 8-6-0 this year, with a 2.78 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
Thomas Greiss will take over during Bernier’s absence. Greiss stopped 16-of-18 shots he faced in relief Thursday, earning just his second win in 18 appearances (2-11-4).
It has been a rough go for Greiss, who has a 3.46 GAA and .883 save percentage.
“I’d love to get him in a game where we don’t give up a whole lot of Grade A opportunities,” Blashill said. “He’s tried to get his game kind of back in order. He’s gotten in games that were difficult games for goaltenders, so that hasn’t helped him. It was unfortunate he got a ton of games when we had a bunch of guys out for a stretch and our roster just wasn’t as strong as it is today. That hurt his record.
“But we got lots of confidence in Thomas. He’s done it for a long time. He’s been through the ebbs and flows of seasons. He knows how to handle these kinds of things. He’s just got to go out and stop the ones he’s supposed to stop and make a big save at a critical moment. That’s what winning goaltending does.”
