One of the referees working the Detroit Red Wings’ 2-0 loss at Nashville Tuesday was heard on a hot mic saying he planned on calling a penalty against the Predators, apparently regardless if it was warranted.
The NHL is looking into the matter, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
It happened after Nashville’s Viktor Arvidsson was called for tripping Jon Merrill at 4:56 of the second period.
“It wasn’t much, but I wanted to get a (expletive) penalty against Nashville early in the ...” a voice said on the Nashville broadcast before it faded.
Tim Peel called the penalty, but it is unclear whether it was him or Kelly Sutherland who made the remark.
