CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia has more than 5,500 active cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday, the highest total in two weeks, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR).
As active case totals dropping since mid-January, cases have risen since March 15. Active cases were at 5,613 on March 7, dropping from nearly 30,000 on January 10.
The DHHR confirmed 348 new cases in Sunday’s report and six additional deaths. The statewide death total is now at 2,606.
Confirmed deaths include an 84-year old female from Putnam County, a 71-year old female from Kanawha County, an 84-year old male from Berkeley County, a 92-year old male from Wood County, a 71-year old male from Kanawha County, and a 73-year old male from Boone County.
“Every day we renew our commitment to ending this devastating disease,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. “Though we may grow weary of the pandemic, we must not tire of efforts toward prevention. To all who have lost a loved one, we extend our deepest sympathy.”
Hospitalizations due to the virus in the state are at 198. ICU patients total 67.
Jefferson County is the only red county on the COVID-19 alert map after Hardy and Webster were last week.
As of Sunday, 267,520 West Virginians have been fully vaccinated.
