The Detroit Red Wings waived veteran forward Frans Nielsen Sunday, a move designed to provide more roster flexibility.
Nielsen, 36, is certain to clear Monday at noon. That will give the Red Wings the option of assigning him to the taxi squad if they elect to do so. However, they probably won’t do that right away, if at all, since Nielsen has been a regular in the lineup, appearing in 18 of 20 games this season (no goals, three assists, minus-1).
Nielsen has one year remaining on his contract at a $5.25 million cap hit after this season.
The Red Wings made the same move with defenseman Danny DeKeyser a week ago.
Teams must have a minimum of four players (and no more than six) on their taxi squad at all times. They prefer not having a younger player on the taxi squad, someone who could be playing regularly in the AHL, like Evgeny Svechnikov.
