EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Vanderburgh and Warrick counties are now in the "red" as the number of per capita COVID-19 cases and positive testing rates in Southwest Indiana continue to soar.
Vanderburgh reported 234 new cases and one new death Wednesday while Warrick reported 107 new cases.
The data, found on the Indiana State Health Department's statewide dashboard of cases, brings Vanderburgh County's totals to 16,711 cases since the first one emerged on March 19 and 207 deaths since the first occurred on April 6.
No new deaths were reported Wednesday in Warrick, Posey, Gibson, Spencer or Perry counties.
Statewide, Indiana logged 6,214 new cases and 80 new deaths. The number of Hoosiers who have died from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic is now 8,371.
Health officials have warned that a spike in cases is probable over the next two weeks due to people having unadvised holiday gatherings.

The seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals, which covers the period of Dec. 24-30, remains higher than 30% in every area county except Spencer, which dropped to 24.2% Wednesday. In Gibson and Dubois counties those rates surpassed 40%.
In this area, only Perry County remained in the "orange" level on the ISDH color-coded advisory map, which indicates a high number of weekly cases per capita and a high testing positivity rate. Gibson, Posey, Pike, Dubois and Spencer counties joined Vanderburgh and Warrick in the red.
Wednesdays are when the ISDH updates the map colors and incidence per 100,000 residents. Vanderburgh increased from 586 to 726 per 100,000 this week, Warrick 565 to 760, Posey 475 to 739, Gibson 439 to 555, Pike 629 to 686 and Spencer 586 to 848.
Even in Perry County, which remained "orange," the number per 100,000 increased from 323 to 479.
In Dubois County, the number of cases per 100,000 is now the highest in the state, increasing from 914 to 1,120. Outside of Southwest Indiana, only Rush, Union, Orange and Fountain counties showed numbers in the 700 and 800 range.
Hospital officials have expressed concern over high hospitalization rates over the past month, as cases have continued to soar.
Wednesday's numbers in the Indiana State Department of Health's 12-county District 10, including Vanderburgh and Warrick counties show COVID-19 patients were occupying 28.3% of ICU beds, the highest so far this week. The number of ICU beds available dropped to 17.4% Wednesday.
Statewide, the number of ICU beds available is 22.6% while COVID-19 patients occupy 27.4% of Indiana ICU beds.
The ISDH updates its online dashboard of COVID-19 data daily, including deaths, as it tracks the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
COVID-19 Vaccinations
The state recently created a COVID-19 Vaccination Dashboard that is updated weekly on Wednesdays with data current as of the Tuesday before.
Statewide, a total of 52,209 additional people were given their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination during the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5. There were 585 in that same period who ISDH reports were fully vaccinated.
ISDH reports that 128,026 Hoosiers have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine since they started being administered late 2020 and 585 Hoosiers who are fully vaccinated since vaccinations began.
Statewide, the age group to receive the largest share of the first dose of the vaccine is both 40-49 and 50-59 with 22%. Close behind was 30-39 with 21.6%. Those aged 60-69 have received 15.2%, 70-79 3.2% and 80 and over 1.3% of the total. Of those receiving the vaccine, 70.5% are female and 29% male.
In Vanderburgh County, 2,114 people received their first dose of the vaccine from Dec. 30-Jan. 5 and 56 were reported as fully vaccinated for the same time period. In Warrick 887 received their first dose and 51 their second during the same time period. Overall, 5,638 Vanderburgh County residents have received their first dose of the vaccine 2,525 Warrick County residents have been given their first dose.
