STEUBENVILLE — Playing for the first time in two weeks, Shadyside coach Serge Gentile had a feeling his team would come out a little bit rusty.

It did, finding itself in a hole after a turnover-filled first quarter and narrowly behind at halftime.

By the third quarter, though, the Tigers had shaken off the rust and did not look back, pulling away for a 48-28 victory over Steubenville Monday night.

“We just got in rhythm,” Gentile said. “We hadn’t played in two weeks, so I figured it was going to be a little sloppy there in the beginning. We got in the flow of the game and did a much better job taking care of the ball. After those first four or five minutes we were much, much better.”

For Big Red (5-6) head coach Angie Forte, the message to her team that it takes four good quarters to beat a good team was one it learned the hard way.

“We had a decent first half,” Forte said. “We played 16 minutes of basketball — that’s basically what it comes down to. You have got to put two halves together and come out and compete for 32 minutes.

“(Shadyside) came out and played hard for 32 minute of basketball. They are a well-coached team, they are a team that has had some success and have a nice tradition — and it shows. They competed a little harder than we did.”

Big Red scored the game’s first six points and led 16-11 after one, but scored just 12 points the rest of the way — including one in the fourth quarter, which it entered trailing by 13.

“They turned up the heat, and we didn’t match it,” Forte said. “We started to rush, and things just didn’t go our way.”

After Big Red clung to a 20-19 halftime lead, the Tigers (5-1) scored on the first possession of the second half and never looked back, racking up the first 12 points of the third quarter. They outpaced Steubenville, 21-7, in the third and 29-8 in the second half overall.

“Defensively we played well,” Gentile said. “We rebounded, we were able to kind of keep them off the glass, which is huge and let us get in transition.”

Steubenville was never able to get the lead back down to single digits.

While both teams committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter, the Tigers turned the ball over just 10 more times the rest of the game, while Big Red finished with 34 giveaways.

“Shadyside did a good job of applying some pressure, and we just didn’t handle the pressure very well,” Forte said. “We just didn’t take care of the ball. We have some things we have to get back in the gym and work on.”

During the game-deciding third quarter breakaway, Gentry Brown netted 11 of her game-high 14 points, draining back-to-back 3-pointers that took the wind out of Big Red sails.

“Gentry is a heck-of-an athlete,” Gentile said. “Once the ball goes in for her and she sees it go in, she gets a lot more confidence, as everybody does. She was able to really step in and get some rhythm 3s for us. I don’t know what the stats were, but I thought she was awesome inside keeping them off the glass, getting rebounds, hustling.”

Tory Hendershot dished seven assists (four during the third quarter) and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers in both categories. She finished with 10 points for a double-double, while Baylee Wach also reached double digits with 10 points.

For Big Red, Makayla Abram finished with a team-high 12 points and four boards. Gianna Hill followed with five points. Lexi Martin made a 3 in the first quarter but did not play in the second half due to an apparent injury.
