Former New York Red Bulls and Inter Miami goalkeeper Luis Robles announced his retirement Wednesday, ending a 14-year career. Robles spent 2020 with expansion club Inter Miami but saw his season come to an early end when he suffered a fracture in his left arm in October.
Robles will be best remembered for a career-defining spell with the New York Red Bulls. During seven years with the club, Robles won three Supporters' Shields and was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015. He also set the record for consecutive MLS games played with 183 straight games for the Red Bulls
"My career is full of memories and great stories yet the thing that sticks out the most is the people whom I’ve met along the way," Robles said in a post announcing his retirement on Instagram. "From teammates who put up with me to coaches who challenged me to fans who loved or hated me it’s been so much fun. Thank you to my family who have given me everything that I ever needed to succeed."
The 36-year-old began his career in Germany, signing for Kaiserslautern in 2007 and spent time with the reserve team before making his first-team debut in 2008. He moved to Karlsruher in 2010 and spent two years there before coming to MLS, spending the bulk of his career with the Red Bulls before joining Miami and captaining the club in their first season in the league.
Robles also won three caps with the US men's national team, earning spots on the 2009 Confederations Cup and Gold Cup squads.
Before joining the Red Bulls, Robles contemplated retirement after his time in Germany saw very little playing time and took a job as a realtor in order to get health insurance for him and his then-pregnant wife. He would go on to have an MLS career that that marks him down as one of the league's true great all-time goalkeepers, finishing with 74 shutouts in 253 regular-season games.
