Wilson served as the head coach of the Blue Devils from 1979-82, compiling an overall record of 16-27-1. Duke went 6-5 in each of his last two seasons under Wilson, and the Blue Devils closed out his coaching tenure with a 23-17 win over North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 20, 1982.
Prior to Duke, Wilson served as the head football coach at multiple high schools in North Carolina and Virginia, compiling a 17-year overall record of 138-38-11 with three undefeated regular seasons, eight conference championships and two state titles (1958 & 1964; both at Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.C.). He also spent 10 years (1967-76) as the head coach at Elon College (now University), posting a ledger of 72-34-2 with six conference crowns, three seasons of 10-plus victories and an NAIA national runner-up finish in 1973.
A native of Madison, N.C., and graduate of Davidson College, Wilson was enshrined into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
"I had the good fortune to play for Coach Wilson in the 1966 Shrine Bowl and never forgot the extraordinarily positive experience," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. "He was encouraging, upbeat and a tremendous motivator. We stayed in touch for years thereafter, our paths crossing while he was at Duke and I was in Chapel Hill. I had such respect for him as a coach and as a person. His impact on sports in North Carolina, and the many young people he influenced, was significant. He was truly one of the "good guys"."
Wilson's wife, Katie, passed away on December 26, 2020 and the couple was married for 72 years. Wilson is survived by two sons, one daughter, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
