CALCUTTA — Perennial OVAC powerhouses Steubenville and Beaver Local met on the mat Saturday morning, putting their respective unbeaten dual records on the line.
When the final whistle blew, it was Big Red who remained perfect on the season as the Red (7-0) rolled by the Beavers (11-1), who were ranked eighth in the state in Division II, 40-22.
Steubenville jumped out to an early lead by taking the first four matches of the day.
The Beavers utilized two pins and a major decision to cut Big Red’s lead to 18-16 before the first of two marquee matchups.
At 152 pounds, Beaver Local’s Logan Ours, who holds the No. 2 spot in Division II 145 pounds, bumped up to wrestle previously unbeaten Tyler Muldrew, who is seventh at 152.
A 9-3 decision by Ours gave the Beavers a 19-16 edge. It was the only time Beaver Local would lead as the Beavers would win just one more match on the day, taking the heavyweight bout.
Big Red’s Aaron Ferguson, ranked fourth in Ohio at Division II 160 pounds, earned a pin to remain unbeaten on the season.
Ferguson was expected to wrestle the Beaver’s Logan Krulik, ranked No. 5 in the state, but Krulik sat out Saturday’s match.
In another match with state implications, Steubenville’s Ethan Pappas, ranked No. 4 at Division II 170 pounds, faced off against No. 11 Jonathan Potts. Pappas picked up a 3-0 victory.
Securing the win for Big Red were Brandon Kinney (182) with a major decision, Nate King (195) with a pin and Spencer Ostovich (220) with a 6-2 decision.
Steubenville returns to the mat Wednesday against another OVAC foe when East Liverpool visits the Crimson Center for Big Red’s senior night.
