As Christmas break nears for West Virginia schools, students in 49 of the state’s 55 counties are on remote learning, according to Saturday’s West Virginia Department of Education COVID-19 school re-entry map.
That list of remote learning counties includes many of the state’s largest school districts, as Kanawha, Cabell, Monongalia, Berkeley and others will have students learning from home.
Only one county — McDowell — is green this week. Three others are yellow and four are gold.
Calhoun and Lewis counties — both gold — have opted for remote learning instead of in-person instruction.
Locally, Ohio County joins Brooke, Hancock, Marshall and Tyler in the red this week. Only Wetzel County is in orange.
For Marshall County, this marks week eight of remote learning.
In Ohio County, all students will enter their seventh consecutive week of remote learning while students in Ohio, for the most part, remain in school. Brooke and Hancock county students have been out of class for four consecutive weeks, while Wetzel is starting its fourth week of remote and Tyler, its fifth.
Winter break for Ohio County students begins Dec. 23.
Testing in most counties throughout the state has been down recently. Monongalia County, which was green just a few weeks ago, now is red.
On the Saturday West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources COVID-19 map, all local counties were red. Hancock and Brooke counties have two of the four highest infection rates in the entire state, joining Pleasants and Hardy as the only four counties with an infection rate of more than 120 people per 100,000 residents over the past seven days. On a positive note, vaccinations are set to continue this week, with area nursing home residents, health care and emergency workers receiving their first dose.
