Three Eastern Panhandle counties remain in red on DHHR map - Martinsburg Journal

As of Christmas Day, 37 of the state’s 55 counties in the state were coded as red on the Department of Health and Human Resources map as West Virginia continues administering the initial doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Only two counties were green or yellow — one in each category, and three were gold, those considered the “best” designations.

Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties were all in red as of the holiday, Berkeley and Morgan both spending the final week of school prior to the holiday break in the “worst” of the designations. Like the vast majority of the counties, the three local counties spent the entirety of last week with both the infection rate and positivity rate in red.

Red is considered “substantial community transmission,” which indicates 25 or more cases per 100,000 residents or a positivity rate greater than 8%. When the two numbers fall into separate designations, the lower of the two is used for both the DHHR map and the West Virginia Department of Education map.

Berkeley County’s week saw the infection rate with numbers far exceeding the baseline of 25 cases for red, showing as high as 77.56 on Dec. 20 before coming down to 75.52 on Christmas. The positivity rate hovered around 13.50 early in the week before settling at 14.20 on Christmas.

Jefferson’s infection rate was a bit lower than Berkeley’s, though still double that baseline of 25. The county saw the infection rate as high as 59.25 early in the week before it decreased to 49.25 by Christmas. The positivity rate slowly rose throughout the period before coming down on Christmas to 9.30.

Morgan County’s infection rate stayed in the low-60s the majority of the week, capping with 61.51 on Christmas, and the positivity rate settled at 12.58.

As of 10 a.m. Sunday, the state had 80,710 total cases and 1,254 deaths for a cumulative positivity rate of 4.62%. With the vaccine hitting the state not long after approval for the first wave of doses, 60,875 vaccines have been received and 29,675 have been administered.

The first wave of Phase I of the vaccine is distributed to hospital workers, staff and residents at long-term care facilities and pharmacy staff. The second half of the first phase is community infrastructure employees, emergency response employees, public health officials and first responders.

Free COVID-19 testing will be held in Berkeley County at the Walgreens on Winchester Avenue Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., utilizing the drive-thru pharmacy option. It will also be held at the Dorothy McCormack Center today from 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m.

The Flowing Springs location is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. The other two locations are open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

Appointments for the Walgreens locations can be made on the Walgreens website.
