PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -
For 30 years Red Holland graced the airwaves in Dothan and at WJHG with his commercials, fishing and morning show, and his larger-than-life personality.
Red passed away Friday from complications due to COVID-19.
As his friends and family mourn the loss, they’re also looking back on the memories and laughs they shared with Red over the years.
“I used to love to go places with him because you always, no matter where we went there were people who recognized him or recognized his voice,” said a friend of Red’s Jim Rains. “You couldn’t go anywhere without people wanting to take pictures of him and talk to him and put an arm around Red Holland.”
WJHG’s very own Paris Janos ran the camera for Red’s morning show for years.
He said those morning shows were mostly unscripted but the recipe for its success needed three ingredients.
“You needed Red, the chicken, and the telephone,” said Paris. “The telephone was very important because he would accept any and all calls on that phone. The number was on the bottom of the screen and he would say, ‘Y’all call in!’ and so people would call in, He wouldn’t put them on the air until he had talked to them a little bit but through the phone calls, half the time that was the show.”
Paris said he was able to catch up with Red while he was in the hospital.
“I’m glad I called him. We talked, we cried, and we laughed,” said Paris. “I’m glad I got to connect with him again and talk to him and it’s just so sad that we lost him.”
Whether for the commercials, the fishing, or anything in between, Red had a way of bringing people together.
“He was such a larger-than-life person and everybody knew who he was. Things like that, little things like that, that you don’t even realize the impact he had on people. People still to this day will tell me ‘I watch you every day and I remember when you were on Red Holland’s show.’ and it’s great memories for me.”
