Boulder is installing a red light photo enforcement camera at Diagonal Highway and 47th Street to monitor eastbound through-traffic.
According to a news release from the city, the camera will come online Tuesday in an effort to prevent accidents.
The city stated in the release that running red lights is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents, and there have been a drop in violations and a 70% decrease in annual collisions caused by running red lights since the city began a program to install red light cameras in 1998. The effort to expand the use of red light photo enforcement cameras is part of the city’s Vision Zero action plan, which aims to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries from crashes.
When a violation is captured on photo, the registered owner of the vehicle receives a ticket in the mail.
