CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Of the five colors on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources' County Alert System, red — the highest level — is now tied with orange — second-highest — in terms of the number of counties at that level.
There are 13 counties displayed on the system's map for both orange and red.
Red is the highest level of the County Alert System, indicating both heavy spread of COVID-19 and a high percentage of COVID-19 tests in a county returning positive.
The number of counties in red increased from 11 reported Thursday. The two new counties are Hancock and Nicholas. Both counties, like most in the state, have for several days had an infection rate that puts them in red.
But because the County Alert System map applies whichever metric would give a lower color, until Friday both counties had maintained a low enough positivity rate to keep them out of red.
The 11 other counties in red are: Barbour, Berkeley, Grant, Marshall, Mason, Mineral, Ohio, Wayne, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming.
The 13 counties in orange are: Boone, Brooke, Cabell, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Morgan, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Ritchie, Tyler and Wetzel.
Another 11 counties are in gold: Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Mingo, Pleasants, Roane and Upshur.
Eight counties are in yellow: Lincoln, Logan, Marion, McDowell, Monongalia, Monroe, Raleigh and Taylor.
The remaining 10 counties are in green: Braxton, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Lewis, Mercer, Pendleton, Randolph, Summers, Tucker and Webster.
