CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Swapping positions from Monday and returning to where they were Sunday, Brooke County moved out of the red on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources' County Alert System, while Ritchie County entered the red.

Brooke County saw a drop in its positivity rate — the rolling average of a county's COVID-19 tests that return positive — down to 7.05, returning it to orange, the second-highest alert level.

Meanwhile, Ritchie did not sustain its lowered positivity rate. Having dropped to 7.85 Monday, it jumped up to 8.51 Tuesday. The positivity rate threshold for red is 8.

Both counties are continuing to see an increase in the infection rate — a population-adjusted rolling average of new cases, which has a threshold for red of 25. However, the metric that gives the lowest color is applied to the map.

Ritchie County's infection rate nearly doubled within a week's time, growing from 22.43 as of Nov. 17 to 40.37 as of Tuesday's report from DHHR. Brooke has grown from 68.37 on Nov. 17 to 98.98 as of Tuesday's report.

High rates of infection are being seen throughout the state, with 44 of the state's 55 counties having a rate that would put them in the red, though many have a lower positivity rate that keeps them at a lower color.

Four other counties that were in the red as on the map as of Monday remain at that level: Berkeley, Marshall, Mineral and Wirt.

There are 16 counties in orange: Barbour, Boone, Brooke, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Jackson, Jefferson, Mason, Mingo, Ohio, Putnam, Wayne, Wood and Wyoming.

Six counties are in gold: Cabell, Doddridge, Harrison, Preston, Taylor and Wetzel.

A total of 14 counties are in yellow, with the remaining 14 in green.
