Getting There: Right turns on red - Times Union

Q: Apparently you can't turn right on red at a corner that has a photo enforced sign. Why doesn't the Department of Transportation put up no turn on red signs at those corners?

A: If there is no sign expressly forbidding a right turn on red, it is legal to do so even at an intersection with a red light camera, according to Lt. Robert Donnelly, of the Colonie Police Department, traffic safety division.

However, he said, drivers must come to a complete stop before turning. If a motorist turns without stopping, it is a violation captured by the camera.

Shuttle for voters: CDTA is offering a shuttle bus for voters in election districts 11-2, 12-7 and 12-8 after their polling place was moved to Colonie. It will be available from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The shuttle will run in continuous 30-minute loops between Westview Senior Center, the CDTA bus stop at the corner of Allen Street and Central Avenue, and the polling place at the American Legion Post on Everett Road.

Nov. 3 deadline: Reminder that the extension for expired vehicle inspections, registrations and non-driver ID cards ends Tuesday, Nov. 3. Some of those transactions can be done online or by mail. For more information, visit https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/dmv-reopening-guidance.

Phishing scheme: The state Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday said Friday that recent text messages are a phishing scheme.

The agency says the messages ask recipients to update their mailing address and contact information for expedited compliance with Real ID regulations. Anyone who received such a text message should delete it right away, the DMV says.

Drowsy driving: New York state officials are warning drivers of the risk of drowsy driving as Daylight Saving Time ends.

Rather than rely on strategies such as opening a window, turning on air conditioning or playing loud music, officials advise pulling over and finding a safe place to sleep. They also advise getting enough sleep before driving, taking a break about every 100 miles or two hours and traveling with a passenger.

In 2019, “fatigue/drowsy driving” and/or “driver fell asleep” were listed as contributing factors in police crash reports 5,713 times, according to University at Albany’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research. So far in 2020, those factors have been listed on 2,410 crash reports.

Warning signs of drowsy driving include repeated yawning, struggling to keep one’s eyes open and focused, forgetting the last few miles driven, tailgating or missing traffic signals, and swerving or drifting between lanes.

Northway closures: Watch for lane closures on the southbound Northway near Exit 8A on Tuesday, Nov. 3 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and on Saturday, Nov. 7 between 4 a.m. and noon, weather permitting.

The DOT is conducting culvert repairs.
