DULUTH, MN -- City golf operations operated at a loss again in 2020 in Duluth
City officials are saying they took about a $100,000 hit while operating only Enger golf course, and providing maintenance and upkeep for Lester Golf Course.
The courses have now posted a loss every year since 2010, totaling roughly $2.5-million, according to the city's Parks and Recreation Manager, Jessica Peterson.
We're told, starting with this year's loss, any future years losses will come directly from the Parks & Rec budget, as opposed to the city's general fund.
Peterson said even with one course not open this season, Enger did not reach peak capicity.
"What it does is it actually speaks to the issue of an over abundance of golf holes, and an undersupply of golfers to golf those holes. It is not a good business strategy to spread your folks over more holes than you can afford to maintain."
Plans for the 2021 golf year will be before the city council on Monday.
We're told current projections show if the plan to only allow golfers to play at Enger carries over, the city will break even or turn a profit next year.
