CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Since Sunday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources' County Alert System has seen one county drop out of the highest alert designation, but another enter it.
The County Alert System uses two metrics: infection rate — a population-adjusted rolling average of new cases; and positivity rate — a rolling average of the percentage of COVID tests in the county that return positive. Whichever metric gives the lower color assigns its color to the county on the map.
Ritchie County moved out of red Monday, with its positivity rate dropping to 7.89.
While Ritchie County is no longer red on the map because it is now below the 8% or higher positivity threshold, its infection rate is still at a red level of 37.38 — with the threshold being 25 or more.
Ritchie County is not alone in having a lower color despite having a red-level infection rate. A total of 45 counties have an infection rate of at least 25, with all but five having a low enough positivity rate to keep them out of red.
Brooke County moved into red due to its positivity rate reaching 8.11. The metric saw a steady climb over the past week, from 6.00 on Nov. 16. Its infection rate has also increased over the past week, growing from 63.16 Nov. 16 to 101.58 as of Monday's report.
It joins Berkeley, Marshall, Mineral and Wirt counties in the red.
There are 18 counties in orange: Barbour, Boone, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Jackson, Jefferson, Mason, Mingo, Ohio, Preston, Putnam, Ritchie, Wayne, Wetzel, Wood and Wyoming.
Three counties are in gold: Cabell, Doddridge and Taylor.
A total of 15 counties are in yellow, with the remaining 13 counties in green.
