Red Light Bar and Grill hosts Asian Carp giveaway - WGEM

Illinois officials are trying to take an invasive species out of the water and put them onto dinner tables.

Quincy's Red Light Bar and Grill was the site of one of nine cookouts across the state on Saturday serving up free Asian Carp.

Department of Natural Resources officials said right now Asian Carp are a threat to local ecosystems across the state.

Chief of Fisheries Kevin Irons said they hope creating a demand for them will eliminate the problem.

"We likely can't catch everyone of them, but we can get back," he said. "We can bite back, we can eat them, we can reduce the numbers and make a healthy environment, and also prevent their spread. We can protect the upper Mississippi River. We can protect the Great Lakes."

Irons said if they don't find a way to solve the Asian Carp problem in Illinois waters, the carp will compete with native species and continue to affect the health of local ecosystems.
