Knox County's benchmarks — which are color-coded ratings representing the community's overall progress during the coronavirus pandemic — are mostly red and yellow again this week
This week, new case counts flipped from green last week to red, making it the only benchmark in the red this week.
Testing and regional hospital capacity were both rated yellow this week. Testing has been rated as yellow for several weeks and regional hospital capacity has remained yellow over the course of the pandemic.
Deaths and contact tracing capability were both rated green. Deaths were upgraded to green after being rated yellow last week. It is not clear that it will remain yellow next week. Five people have died in the past two days. If deaths continue at this pace it is likely that deaths will flip to red when the benchmarks are updated next week.
Contact tracing capability has been rated green since the benchmarks were put in place.
The new supplemental data was also updated this week. Over the past seven days cases per capita, a measure of disease prevalence over the population of a community, rose from 17 cases per 100,000 people to 23. The test positivity rate rose from 7% to 9.76%. A 10% positivity rate is a sign that many cases are going undetected.
The news comes as the White House Coronavirus Task Force again placed Tennessee on the red list of coronavirus hotspots. Tennessee is the 14th-worst state in the country for COVID-19 according to White House criteria. Knox County has spent the past month on either the red list or orange list for counties in Tennessee. The orange list is a new addition to the White House Task Force reports added in late September that indicates growing pandemic severity that is not quite as extreme as the red list.
The Knox County Board of Health will meet Wedne to review the benchmarks and metrics as part of their COVID-19 containment efforts. The board will decide whether it will extend, modify or relax COVID-19 restrictions based on this data.
