SANDUSKY – The Ubly varsity football team traveled to Sandusky on Friday night and ran into a red-hot Redskins team, who topped the Bearcats, 38-20.
Ubly head coach Eric Sweeney said Sandusky is a team laden with seniors and a formidable running game featuring powerhouse back Zach Franzel, and his young Bearcat squad still has a lot of growing and learning to do before they will be at the top of their game.
“They’ve got a pretty good team,” Sweeney said.
One bright spot for the Bearcats on Friday night was freshman quarterback Evan Peruski, who for ran for two touchdowns, and the ground game produced 226 yards for Ubly. Carson Heleski also ran for a touchdown.
The Bearcats were without the services of linebacker Nolan Van Erp, who suffered an injury during practice earlier this week. Van Erp, a senior, is a third-year starter on both offense and defense, and his presence will be missed, Sweeney said.
“That hurts,” Sweeney said.
Next up for the Bearcats is a home game against Flint Hamady. Sweeney said the Hawks are a big, athletic team with one outstanding running back, and his team will work hard in practice this upcoming week to get ready for that challenge. He added he’s already seen some improvement in his Bearcats so far this season and knows they still have not reached their full potential.
“I thought we played better this week than we did (against Memphis),” Sweeney said.
The game against visiting Flint Hamady kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9.
