As smoke from wildfires raging on the West Coast migrates to the Midwest, a light gray haze may settle over Michiana at times, while sunrise and sunset take on a red glow.
The “smoky haze” set in over many parts of the Midwest on Monday, as smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington is being carried by jet streams, said National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Roller.
“It’s not so much in the way of cloud cover, but more so that smoky haze that we’re seeing overhead,” said Roller, who works in the weather service’s Northern Indiana office.
At least 26 people have died, and thousands have been displaced, by the fires over the past week. Smoke from the blazes has decreased air quality in parts of the West Coast, though Roller said Michiana residents shouldn’t be too concerned about similar issues.
“Most of that smoke is expected to stay aloft as opposed to near the surface, so we aren’t expecting too much in terms of air quality effects from it,” Roller said
But the haze could exacerbate foggy conditions and lower temperatures as the smoke blocks some of the sun’s radiation and prevents molecules in the air from moving as rapidly.
Roller estimated temperatures could drop anywhere from two to five degrees while the smoke remains in the atmosphere.
The forecast currently calls for temperatures near 80 degrees today before falling into the 60s later in the week.
The sun may also appear more red than normal, especially at sunrise and sunset, since the smoke affects light particles given off by the sun.
“The light particles have to pass through that smoky haze and the blue and yellow particles get shaved off,” Roller said.
