Wayne County was moved to red on the state’s coronavirus alert map.
DALTON A move to red on the state’s coronavirus alert map for Wayne County isn’t prompting any major changes for students at Dalton Local Schools.
Superintendent James Saxer said the district’s restart and reopen plan outlined measures that would be taken if the county status changed during the school year.
On Thursday, Gov. Mike DeWine announced with increased cases in Wayne County it was now a red county. Stark County was lowered to yellow.
Saxer said under the district’s plan, the major changes would include mandatory wearing of face coverings by all students and staff, but the district had already implemented the measure since the start of the school year because of DeWine’s order for students of all ages to wear masks. Before the governor issued the mandatory face mask ruling, the district had planned to recommend that students wear a face covering.
The only other change would be to limit some student activities such as clubs, he said. Those clubs have not yet begun to meet and the start-up will be delayed.
Saxer said discontinuing club gatherings will mostly impact high school students.
Chippewa Local Schools announced Thursday it was canceling classes on Friday and moving to a blended learning plan when school resumes next week.
So far, Saxer has not seen a direct impact on student activities such as sporting events from the county’s change in status.
He warned that if Wayne County sees more COVID-related cases and moves to purple, Dalton learning will go remote. He’s hopeful that won’t be the case.
"Our students have been doing an amazing job," he said. "Even our kindergarten students are wearing their masks."
Added measures in the school, such as plexiglass dividers between desks, are helping to control the spread of the disease, he said.
At sporting events, Saxer sees participants and spectators abiding by face covering and social distancing rules.
"The kids on the sidelines are putting on their masks," he said. "It comes down to if you want to be in school and you want to play sports, you have to abide by the rules. You might be inconvenienced, but is it hurting you? They understand."
