CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Monroe County, which has battled an outbreak of COVID-19 cases in a Lindside nursing home, moved Tuesday to the ‘yellow’ category for the first time.
The 10 a.m. release of new case numbers from the state Department of Health and Human Resources shows Monroe County’s latest rolling 14-day average at 8.61. Monroe was a red category when the map was first released several weeks ago. Its case average topped 25 after an outbreak at the Springfield Center nursing home.
There were 11 counties in ‘orange’ on Tuesday’s map including Kanawha County which is holding steady at a new case average of 22.5 cases over the last week. Monongalia County remains the only county in the red. It’s average dropped slightly Tuesday to 34.2 cases.
The DHHR reported five additional COVID-19 deaths Tuesday including an 87-year old male from Logan County, a 93-year old female from Mason County, a 66-year old female from Mercer County, an 88-year old female from Kanawha County and a 91-year old female from Kanawha County.
“The passing of these West Virginians is reported with a heavy heart and we extend our deepest sympathies to their loved ones,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said.
The state has had 280 COVID-19 deaths including 21 in the past week.
Hospitalizations jumped to 155 Tuesday, the highest since the pandemic began. Fifty-nine of those patients are being treated in intensive care with 26 being treated on ventilators.
