Many performing arts organizations across the Capital Region and beyond will be lit up in red tonight to highlight how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the live events industry.

Called Red Alert RESTART, the nationwide event is organized by We Make Events, a recently formed coalition of trade bodies, businesses, unions and live events workers that advocates for the live events sector in light of COVID-19.

Starting around 9 p.m. Proctors, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Palace Theatre and other organizations and residences in more than 1,500 locations will be lighting their buildings in red. We Make Events will live stream the event on Facebook and YouTube from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Starting in New York City and moving to Los Angeles, the streamed event will show participating buildings and will include live interviews with special guests.

According to We Make Events, the live events industry employs more than 12 million people and contributes $1 trillion annually to the United States economy.

However, 95% of live events have been canceled due to COVID-19 and 96% of companies that produce these events have had to cut staff and/or wages.

Part of the campaign’s goal, according to the coalition, is to urge Congress to pass the RESTART Act, which would extend the Paycheck Protection Program established to support small businesses in response to COVID-19, and to support those who are have been laid off or furloughed by expanding the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Federal Unemployment Compensation programs.
