COLUMBUS, Ohio - Last week, Lorain County had 51 coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, which the federal government says is too high, and it had nine outpatient hospital visits, which is an early indicator of outbreak.
However, on Thursday, not only did Lorain County escape the Level 3 or “red” color on the newly released Ohio Public Health Advisory map, it went down two spaces to Level 1, or “yellow.”
“Frankly we asked what was going on in Lorain,” said Gov. Mike DeWine, announcing the map during his briefing.
Local health officials told him more residents are wearing masks, making sure they follow health protocols.
“Residents are also using caution when planning gatherings or taking the health department’s recommended protocols into consideration when making these plans,” he said.
Seven counties were red in the newest map: Lucas, Putnam, Mercer, Butler, Montgomery, Preble and Wayne.
DeWine described the infection’s spread in the following counties:
-Putnam: Has the highest case rate per 100,000 residents: 268. The county continues to have new cases.
-Montgomery: There have been 1,191 new cases in the past two weeks — this is 19.3% of all the county’s cases since the pandemic began. There’s an increase of outpatient visits of people with COVID-19-like symptoms from 36 on Aug. 24 to 46.3.
-Butler: 19% of its total cases have occurred last two weeks. The increase outpatient visits of people with coronavirus-like illness went from 58 on Aug. 21 to 78 on Sept. 1. Miami University students have returned to classes. “They’ve had outbreaks associated with students attending house parties,” DeWine said.
-Mercer: Has reported 72 new cases, which is almost 9% of the total cases in the county. Community spread continues and DeWine asked residents there to wear masks and socially distance to keep each other safe.
-Preble: The county meets the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention threshold, with 122 cases per 100,000 residents. It has had 50 new cases in the past two weeks, out of 358 total since the beginning of the pandemic. That’s a 14% increase. There have been outbreaks in a group home and officials have worked hard to control outbreaks in a long-term care facility.
-Lucas: The county has 112 cases per 100,000 residents. There have been 481 new cases in the past two weeks. There have been several long-term care facility outbreaks.
-Wayne County: The first time it’s been red. There were 5.5 cases a day on Aug. 15, now there are 12.1 cases a day. The county has had 104 cases in the past two weeks. The number of outpatient visits have doubled recently. The outbreaks have been at churches and businesses and a long-term care facility.
