YOUNGSTOWN — For the fifth week in a row, Ohio's number of new coronavirus cases has declined.
The second wave of the pandemic in Ohio hit a peak in mid-July, when the state reported 9,356 new coronavirus cases during the week of July 12.
Since then, the number of new cases have steadily decreased:
- July 19 to July 25: 9,050
- July 26 to Aug. 1: 8,484
- Aug. 2 to Aug. 8: 7,453
- Aug. 9 to Aug. 15: 7,345
- Aug. 16 to Aug. 22: 6,117
So far this month, the number of new cases has dipped below 1,000 on 11 days. In August, the state has so far reported the week's lowest number of new cases over the weekend.
In July, the state reported less than 1,000 new cases on only five days,
Steadily decreasing overall numbers reflect a "fundamental shift" from coronaviurs spikes in more populous corners of the state.
“We're not seeing an increase in the urban [counties]," DeWine said. "It's going down in urban [counties], and we're seeing it go up in rural [counties].”
Public Health Advisory System
During his Thursday briefing, Gov. Mike DeWine released an updated map for the state's Public Health Advisory System. Four counties moved to Level 3 (red), five counties stayed in Level 3 and seven counties — including Cuyahoga — were downgraded to Level 2 (orange).
For the second time since the map was released, Trumbull County moved from Level 2 (orange) to Level 3 (red). The county was first placed into Level 3 on June 30 but later downgraded to orange.
Trumbull County went from an average of nine new cases per day on Aug. 7 to an average of 13 new cases per day on Aug. 12. Overall, 115 cases were reported in the past two weeks.
The data collected from the Trumbull County Combined Health District indicates that the transition from orange to red is a direct result of two outbreaks that occurred between Aug. 10 to 17 at two long term care facilities. The facilities accounted for 47 of the cases in the county.
Gov. Mike DeWine said the outbreaks at long-term care facilities involved employees and residents.
After moving to Level 2 (orange) two weeks ago, Columbiana remained at Level 2 in the updated map. Mahoning County remains at Level 2.
ZIP code breakdowns
Mahoning County Public Health provided ZIP code breakdowns on July 2 and have been updating the totals weekly. The most recent update was provided on Aug. 24 to the department's COVID-19 dashboard.
Over the last week, the largest increase in cases was seen in ZIP code 44452, which includes parts of North Lima. That ZIP code saw an increase of 41 cases since Aug. 14. Between July 2 and Aug. 14, only five new cases were reported in the area.
At least 18 of the 21 new cases in 44452 were reported at long-term care facilities. However, the state's updated list does not include data reflecting an outbreak in the area.
ZIP codes 44512 (Boardman), 44514 (Poland) and 44515 (Austintown) each saw an increase of 12 cases since Aug. 14..
Two ZIP codes experienced one additional death: 44406 (Canfield) and 44514 (Poland). The map showed deaths in 44515 (Austintown) decreased by one to 30 since Aug. 14.
Columbiana County provided ZIP code breakdowns of coronavirus cases on June 24 but has not updated the totals since then.
More than a month after Mahoning Matters called for the data in Ohio Records Requests to local health departments, Trumbull County released ZIP code breakdowns on July 27. The local health department has not updated the totals.
