NEWARK - Licking County remained red on Ohio's Public Health Advisory map this week as the county also surpassed 50 reported coronavirus deaths.

In a Thursday press conference, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced Licking County was to remain red, or level three meaning a high exposure and spread, on the map, along with several other counties. He noted Licking County met two other indicators - cases per capita and cases in non-congregated settings.

The Licking County Health Department on Friday afternoon reported 1,295 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 95 probable cases for a total of 1,390. Of those cases, 658 are considered recovered.

The agency also reported 53 coronavirus deaths for Licking County.

The Ohio Department of Health on Wednesday reported eight current week resident cases at Middleton Senior Living in Granville, three at Newark Care and Rehabilitation, and four at Arlington Care Center in Newark. Of current week staff cases, six were reported at Newark Care and Rehabilitation, and one each at Kendal at Granville, Middleton Senior Living, and Pataskala Oaks Care Center.

ODH reported 75 total resident cases at Newark Care and Rehabilitation, 22 at Middleton Senior Living, 17 at Arlington Care Center, and one at Kendal and Granville. The agency reported 49 total staff cases at Newark Care and Rehabilitation, 11 at Middleton Senior Living, five at Arlington Care Center, and one each at Kendal at Granville, Pataskala Oaks Care Center, and Tuscany Gardens nursing home.

Olivia Biggs, Licking County Health Department spokeswoman, on Friday said an outbreak must go 28 days without a reported case linked to the outbreak in order for it to be declared over.

She reported 52 cases identified and linked to an outbreak at Christian Life Center in Heath, with 47 of those confirmed and five as probable.

Biggs reported 12 deaths associated with Middleton Senior Living and 26 deaths associated with Newark Care and Rehabilitation. She explained long-term care facilities report the number of patients who test positive for coronavirus, then pass away, to the Licking County Health Department.

"We chart that the patients passed away, but ODH determines if they will be counted as a COVID-19 death once they complete their process of reviewing the death certificate," Biggs said. "We have 26 deaths from Newark Care and Rehabilitation Center and 12 deaths from Middleton reported to us, but we do not know yet if ODH will list all of them as COVID-19 deaths."

Health officials have continued to stress social distancing, mask wearing, washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick.
