COLUMBUS, Ohio - Just six counties are red or Level 3 in the state’s coronavirus advisory map, the lowest number in the nine weeks Ohio’s been utilizing the color-coded system.
Gov. Mike DeWine unveiled the latest map on Thursday showing the following six counties in red: Lorain, Erie, Lucas, Mercer, Preble and Montgomery.
Cuyahoga County, for the second week, remained off the list of red counties. This was the first week Franklin County was downgraded from red.
What color a county ends up in is based on numerous factors, including: 50 or more cases per 100,000 residents over a two week period, an increase in new cases for five days, cases in non-congregate living areas, emergency room visits, doctor visits, hospitalizations, intensive-care unit occupancy.
“The big story this week is we have 76 counties at the same level as they were last week, which is the smallest movement between levels that we have experienced so far,” DeWine said.
The following are details about the red counties, according to DeWine:
-Lorain: There were 51 cases per 100,000 people on Wednesday, a decrease from earlier numbers of 80 cases per 100,000 residents. DeWine said the county is making improvement, with a decrease in outpatient hospital visits from 26 on Aug. 15 to 9 on Aug. 25.
-Erie: There have been 156 cases per 100,000 residents in last two week. The county saw 116 new during past two weeks, which is 15% of total cases since pandemic began. Long-term care facility outbreaks have spread to the community, DeWine said.
-Lucas: There have been 110 cases per 100,000 residents. The virus is spreading among households and the county continues to have community spread.
-Montgomery: The county returns to red, having been red in the past and decreased to orange. The county added 548 cases in the past two weeks, and has experienced outpatient visit increases, which is an early indicator of spread.
-Mercer: The county is trending in the right direction but it’s not yet at the levels to decrease, DeWine said. Cases have gone 298.7 per capita two weeks ago, to 213.7 this week. That’s double the number of what’s considered a high incidence of cases.
-Preble: The county added 60 cases in the past two weeks, out of 323 total cases in the county since the beginning of the pandemic. That’s close to 20% of its total number of cases. The county has had two significant outbreaks. There are 146 cases per 100,000 people.
