Jack Sherman, a guitarist who played on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' debut album and toured the United States with the group, has died of unspecified causes. He was 64.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers confirmed his death on Twitter.
"We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed," they wrote on Twitter.
"He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between," the group continued. "Peace on the boogie platform."
They also shared the news on their official Instagram page.
Founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and bassist Flea commented on the post.
"Love to sherm," Flea wrote.
Fans shared their condolences as well.
"I’m so sorry for you guys’ loss. Like every past and present member of RHCP, he brought a unique flavor and his contributions won’t be forgotten 💕" wrote Instagram user @amarin___93.
Fashion photographer David Mushegain, who has worked extensively with the band and published the book "Red Hot Chili Peppers: Fandemonium," with them, left a single heart in the comments section.
According to the BBC, Sherman replaced guitarist Hillel Slovak in late 1983 before Slovak, a founding member of the group, returned in 1985.
Afterwards, Sherman contributed to two more Red Hot Chili Peppers releases: "The Abbey Road EP" and "Mother's Milk."
When the Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, Sherman was not included. According to Variety, he was disappointed by the outcome and placed blame on the group for his exclusion. Dave Navarro, another former guitarist of the group, was also left out.
