Cuyahoga County still in red for coronavirus spread; three more Ohio counties move to red - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County remains in the red in Ohio’s coronavirus alert system, meaning the virus continues to spread here at a high rate.

Three new counties — Clermont, Brown and Muskingum — joined the list of Ohio counties in the red, Gov. Mike DeWine announced during his Thursday press conference. This brings the total number of red counties to 12, DeWine said.

Allen and Medina counties dropped from red to orange, indicating that community spread has lessened.

“We congratulate them,” DeWine said, sharing data from the Ohio Department of Health. As of Thursday, there were 3,481 confirmed deaths and 99,856 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, the Ohio Department of Health said.

In addition to Cuyahoga, the counties under the red designation are Brown, Clermont, Erie, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Lucas, Marion, Mercer, Montgomery and Muskingum.

The red designation is the second most severe status in an alert system the state established to show where the coronavirus was spreading and how quickly.

The state health department determines each county’s color designation using seven different data indicators, including recent increases in community spread, doctor’s visits, hospitalizations and intensive care unit stays. Counties are designated red if they trigger four or five of those metrics. Those with six or all seven of the factors are designated purple.

The difference between the statuses corresponds to the types of precautions the state advises residents in the affected counties to take.

While Cuyahoga County has gotten previously got close to getting to the most severe purple, it has since been removed the state’s watch list. It currently only meets two of the seven indicators, however it remains at red because the number of cases has not fallen under the rate of 100 per 100,000 people over a two-week period.

Cuyahoga County had decreased its daily number of cases per 100,000 population. If that trend continues, the county could step down from red to orange.

“That’s very good news there,” DeWine said.

The top four counties in terms of cases per 100,000 population are Mercer, Champaign, Lawrence and Darke, DeWine said.

“Mercer is way above anybody else,” he said. Mercer County had 298.7 cases per 100,000 residents between July 29 and Aug. 11. “Significant community spread is taking place,” DeWine said about Mercer.

Meanwhile, nine counties dropped from the orange to yellow designation.

DeWine shared stories that illustrate how community spread is still happening throughout the state. In Clark County, seven guests at a card party later tested positive for COVID-19.

Some small workplaces in New Philadelphia and Dayton are are having outbreaks, and some have closed for cleaning, he said.
